Return to the zone: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Review
A Zone That Has A Rich History
There is something about the Zone that makes it feel its quite natural, a feeling hard to fathom for us who have traveled there – be it the weird 1979 Andrei Tarkovsky film, the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy or even Roadside Picnic. All Together, the set pieces helped shaped the zone to complete a set piece. My colleague, a big fan of the game, wrote about S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chernobyl after he finished the story, I am writing my opinion with fewer hours than him, so for a more in-depth review, I recommend you his post.
The Devastating Reality of the Hunt
Unadulterated and unapologetic emotions is one of the most powerful features the game has to offer. Being in the bloodsucker lair in Call of Pripyat? Well the horrific scene you are imagining is amplified by 10 fold in this world. This game isn’t just about the overwhelming monsters, which I assure you there are, it’s about the set design. Everything around you feels hauntingly quiet except for the noises coming from your geiger counter or the distant screams of animals you can’t see. Switching on your flashlight and creeping forward knowing that there is something, or someone, patiently waiting in the dark for you.
And yet in the wake of all the fear that it brings the Zone remains astonishingly gorgeous. The uncontrolled weather alters the scenery from mixing gold with the delicate touch of sunrise to the ominous black that precedes a tempest. The Anomalies are threatening and at the same time tantalizing as they pulse and spark with lethal energy. The beauty of the Zone is insincere and appeals to the fainthearted only to later violently put them back to their place making them well aware of the fact that this is not the place for them.
Nostalgia Meets Modernity
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 does it perfectly carrying out the dual purpose paying homage to the ancestors and moving forward. For the old enthusiasts, they should be happy to hear the game play is expected to be similar to what they’re used however the uninterrupted realm of the trilogy expands in its luster which greatly improves it. Each battle is significant as the weight of the gunplay imbues the entire experience with a sense of satisfaction and trustworthiness . Though you may not feel daunted, you will certainly always feel sharp and stimulated thanks to the intricate yet engaging survival mode.
The narrative this time around has definitely improved. In S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl, the story is better developed and thought out as opposed to being merely atmospheric as was often the case with the original titles. Even though it is still your story, your decisions and your activities, the different characters and happenings provide the plot with a sense of reality. At the center of it all, you will interact with individuals who would shatter your heart, betray you, or motivate you to go to the Zone in the first instance.
Game Breakers
There are always bound to be a few issues and quirks that prevent the Zone from becoming the zone and in this case there is the ambition of the game. However, if we are being honest, it does seem appropriate given the level of ambition in the game given that the zone has always been a little imperfect. Game and graphics bugs alongside animation errors were common issues but GSC Game World has been relatively transparent, explaining how often changes will be made alongside addressing the users feedback.
The Verdict: This is Excellent
As far as I am concerned, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has delivered for the devoted fans as it has adequately portrayed the sentiment of the first trilogy. It adheres closely to the themes reflected in the zone, the danger, the beauty, the magnetic nature of The Zone, and seeks to multiply all of them for a newer generation. The new release is for veterans, newbies, players who buy Xbox shooting games, guys who are fans of quality shooters, and so on. You don’t need to be a stalker in order to enjoy the game, even new starters will find the game enjoyable.
